The Renegades Brett Badessa ran the opening kickoff the length of the field for a touchdown, but the Lions answered back with a scoring drive, helped in part by a couple of penalties. The Lions took a 21-14 lead in to the locker room at half time.

The Renegades scored to tie the game, but the Lions kicked a field goal to take a 24-21 lead. The Renegades scored on a nice pass from Kody Smith to Mike Gersie with about 2 minutes left in the game.

Congratulations Shawnee!

From the Burlington County Times...

Shawnee works hard to outlast Cherry Hill West

CHERRY HILL — Shawnee High School running backs Chris Lapierre and Mike Cunningham proved last night that each player on a football team is just as important as the next.

While Lapierre's starred, rushing 39 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-24 win over Cherry Hill West, Cunningham, who touched the ball just three times, may have had the game's most pivotal play.

In a Burlington-Olympic League game Shawnee jumped out to a quick lead, as Brett Badessa returned the game's opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown.

But the Renegades, who scored seven points in each quarter, would be forced to battle all night in a game filled with bruising offense and timely defense.

“I knew it would be a tough game,” Cherry Hill West head coach Jim Scerbo said. “They've got a (heck) of a ground attack ... I thought that both teams would score points, but not that many.”

After Shawnee's early touchdown, Cherry Hill West fought back, scoring two first-quarter touchdowns, highlighted by Nate Owens' 67-yard scoring scamper with just :05 remaining.

The teams traded second quarter touchdowns, and the Renegades went into the locker room trailing at halftime, 21-14.

But a second half push by the Shawnee defense allowed them to battle back. Holding the Lions to a scoreless third quarter and a three-point second half, the Renegades were able to squeak out a victory.

“This was a character win,” Shawnee head coach Tim Gushue said. “We were down at half, and had not stopped (Cherry Hill West's offense). We made nice adjustments in the second half.”

Lapierre's three-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter tied the game, 21-21.

“I definitely knew it was going to be a smash-mouth type of game,” Lapierre said. “We kept driving and were getting results, so we kept with it.”

An early fourth-quarter field goal gave the Lions a 24-21 lead, but it would be temporary.

A long, late fourth quarter drive, capped off by a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kody Smith to wide receiver Mike Gersie put Shawnee back on top, 28-24, with just 4:12 remaining in the game.

After turning the ball over on downs with under two minutes remaining, the Lions needed to stop Shawnee's offense in hopes of getting one last shot to score.

But Cunningham's 30-yard scamper on a vital third-and-8 play gave the Renegades a much-need first down, sealing the game.

“Mike Cunningham is the heart of this team,” Gushue said. “He is a young man who is unselfish, and he showed what he can do tonight.”
